This post is all about ADHD laundry!

When thinking about laundry it can get overwhelming very quickly, but it doesn’t have to be this way! I know I have gotten so behind that over the course of a week I washed every single item of clothing that I own.

That week was exhausting and I knew I never wanted to go through that again, so I decided to go on a hunt for all the best laundry hacks out there that have ADHD brains in mind. I didn’t want to find hacks that were helpful for neurotypical brains because lots of those tips aren’t going to be super useful.

With ADHD especially it is important to stay ahead on tasks or else everything will fall behind all at once or when life gets overwhelming. These tips are designed to help you get ahead on your laundry and help you stay super organized for the future!

ADHD Laundry Hacks

1. Buy Socks In Bulk

When thinking about socks, do you notice how hard it is to match all of them and keep them organized? Well, if you have all socks in the same color, style, and brand then you can mix and match sets, no problem!

Socks are an easy swap because you probably have a million socks you can’t find the other match to. As you get rid of socks, when you purchase more, find your favorite pair and buy a million of that pair (more like 5 or 6 pairs). My favorite socks are bombas, so I buy black bombas every few months so I can slowly build up a wordrobe of my favorite socks. I know I will wear them, and if I lose one, I would never know because they are so easy to match up.

2. Invest In More Storage

A one-time investment into some storage cubes can make all the difference in your laundry situation. If you don’t have enough space for your clothes to go, then you are going to get overwhelmed and never get any laundry done! Then what happens is all your clothes end up on the floor and cause chaos in your mind and energy.

The photo below is a photo of the cube storage that I nuzzled in between my bed and my desk. I thought for sure I didn’t have enough space in my room for more storage, but I was able to find a solution that works really well and looks really pretty!

The wire containers are from Target, but you can use any containers you’d like. I think being able to see my clothes has made me more organized and allows me to see exactly what I would like to wear without having to dig through a bunch of drawers.

3. Have Fewer Clothes

Owning less clothing is one of the best tips for ADHD laundry. When thinking about ADHD, I often think of getting overwhelmed and paralyzed by tasks. The best way to prevent this is to have less stuff to do and less stuff to manage. Each new item that you own is another piece of responsibility that is put on you and upkeep that you have to maintain.

Less clothing means fewer loads of laundry if you get behind and fewer things to put away when you are done. This has been a lifesaver for me because it has meant that I have saved time and done laundry more often with smaller loads. Doing a smaller load is super motivating because it takes no time at all!

4. Keep An Extra Laundry Basket For Cleanish Clothes

Instead of putting clothes you’ve worn for a few hours on the floor, on a chair, or in the dirty clothes basket, have a dedicated laundry basket! When it comes to ADHD and laundry, being organized doesn’t always work the best. But when you are trying to get everything put up, it is nice to have a place for dirty clothes and clothes you’d like to wear again.

Whether you are having people over or you simply want a cleaner room to think clearer, having this extra basket can give you a little bit of structure when it comes to cleanliness in general. Here are some extra thoughts on this extra laundry basket:

  • Put the basket on top of an armoire or dresser to save floor space.
  • Get a smaller basket since you don’t want to create a habit of re-wearing clothes from weeks ago.

5. Buy Laundry Products In Bulk

With ADHD, if we have a task we need to do, tasks can get mixed up regardless of priority. Oftentimes we see all tasks as equal priority. So when we run out of laundry detergent or fabric softener we tend to put that off which can cause us to fall even farther behind. When you notice you are running low, it is a good idea to write it down on a list or go to the store immediately to go buy some more.

After getting my Math degree I have been obsessed with finding a good deal and buying things at a good price. After doing some calculations, Sam’s club has the cheapest option for laundry pods, $.15 a load, out of all the stores in my area. I am sure that Costco would be a great option too, I just don’t have one nearby.

6. Use Laundry Pods To Make It Super Simple

Laundry Pods are the easiest way to simplify your laundry routine. Their pre-measured, all-in-one design eliminates the need to measure out detergent, reducing the cognitive load and potential for forgetfulness or distraction during the laundry process.

The clear, single-use pods also minimize decision-making and potential mess, providing a straightforward solution for those who may struggle with executive function challenges. Also, their brightly colored appearance and distinct texture can help individuals with ADHD better remember and locate them, enhancing organization and efficiency in the laundry routine.

7. Set A Timer On Your Phone

Without a timer, remembering to take the clothes out and putting them away can be a difficult task. When it comes to ADHD, if you don’t see it you will forget it because we often lack object perminance. But don’t fret! Timers are a solution for many of our ADHD issues, laundry included!

The worst feeling in the world is when you leave your clothes in the dryer for too long and then they get all wrinkly and look a mess. If you set your timer and imediately put your clothes away then you will save yourself a lot of hassle!

8. Keep Clothes Off Of The Floor

Once you get into the habit of putting dirty or clean clothes on the floor it is hard to stop. So the best way to stop it is to prevent it! Never let your clothes touch the floor. Once they are on the floor you will not want to pick them up. Here are some tips and tricks for keeping your clothes on the floor:

  • Buy extra baskets for cleanish and dirty clothes so the clothes have a spot to go and so that your floor can have some visual space.
  • Keep clothes off of your bed as well, this will help you set boundaries with your clothes!

9. Create A Routine

This might feel like a hassle, but I can assure you that having a routine will make you feel much more put together. A simple routine such as one day a week where you do your laundry can make all the difference in your laundry routine. Here is a simple routine on a laundry day:

  • Gather all clothing from around the house that needs to be washed, check bathrooms, bedrooms, and chairs.
  • Seperate out towels and wash those first.
  • Then wash all clothing.
  • Dry everything.
  • Fold clothing and put everything away.

10. Separate “Wash And Wear” Clothes

Wash and wear clothes do not require any ironing, lint rolling, or any other special treatment after you wash. This will give you easy-to-wear options that don’t overwhelm you when it comes to wearing them. Keeping your “need to iron” or “need to lint roll” clothes separate will allow you to have easy options for clothes.

When hanging up your clothes create a section of clothing that is easy to wear or that are your favorites. Having easy to wear clothes ready to go at any given moment can help you cut down on decisions you have to make.

11. Listen To Music Or An Audiobook While Doing Laundry

As a reward for yourself you should have a specific playlist or audiobook that you can only listen to when doing laundry or other household tasks. This can help you get motivated to do your tasks and reward yourself

Here is a list of my favorite books right now! If you aren’t a book lover, the Libby app is a way to get audiobooks for free through your library! You can simultaneously support your local library and listen to amazing books while doing your laundry. That seems like an ADHD dream to me.
