9 Messy Room Solutions That Actually Work

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. Read a really boring disclaimer above to learn more!

When thinking about messy room solutions you have to think about why your room is messy. Is it laundry? Food? Trash? Shoes? Things? All of the above? Figuring out what it is is the first step to figuring out how to make your room super clean all the time.

Make a list titled “Messy Room Solutions,” and start writing down your biggest problems with keeping your room clean, and include some spaces between the problems. Then throughout this post, you can write down what solutions will help you with those issues!

Messy Room Solutions You Need To Try

1. Get Extra Drawers

With an ADHD brain, we tend to value maximalism. We see something, buy it, and then have no use for it after a short period. But that shouldn’t ruin or overrule your life. Having extra storage to put all your things in can be so helpful.

It clears up so much brain space if you have places for everything you own. If you know exactly where you are going to put something, it makes you feel so put together!

2. Find Audiobooks That You’ll Love

I highly recommend listening to audiobooks while you are cleaning. If you haven’t found a book that you love, then start watching TikToks and YouTube videos of book recommendations. I will leave a link to my Amazon Storefront that has a list of books that I would recommend.

BUT! I suggest using Libby. If you haven’t heard of Libby, all you need is a library card and you can get free ebooks and audiobooks. I don’t suggest buying books until you have proven to yourself you like to read.

Listening to a book can distract your brain enough to just do the task. I recommend trying to focus on the book. This is a learned skill, but one that you can master. Every time you notice you are focused on the cleaning aspect of… well… cleaning, then pull your attention back to the book. Maybe make a list beforehand so you can look at it to see what tasks you need to do. Then all the mental load is over with.

3. Have Pretty Things To Look At

Having a pretty bookshelf, plants, or decor on your walls can change the game for keeping your room clean. If you can’t tolerate being in your room because it isn’t nice in any way, then you won’t feel inclined to clean it.

This is one of my favorite hacks because when I can look up and see pretty things, I want my whole room to match how pretty those things are. It is a way of external motivation that doesn’t take much effort once it is set up.

Here are some recommendations for decorating your room:

  • Go to thrift stores. I mean go. Don’t choose something every time you go, but every once in and while you will find a piece that you will fall in love with.
  • Find neon signs or a quote that you love to put on your wall.
  • Search the internet until you find things you are obsessed with. Like that, you think about it for days on end after you see it. Here is a link to my list of home products on Amazon to get your juices flowing!

4. Trash Cans… Have A Trash Can

If you don’t have a way to throw away trash in your room, then your whole room and every surface will become a trash can. Instead, just put a trash can in your room.

This might seem like a simple solution or something completely bizarre, but I promise you it is such a game changer. Picking up will never be easier than when you have a trashcan. Have one sock that you haven’t been able to find the match to for forever? Trash can. Did your dog chew up a tank top? Trash can.

Instead of having to leave your room and potentially getting distracted along the way, have a trash can available to throw away things as they come up.

5. Throw Away So Much Stuff

Getting rid of a bunch of stuff will make it so much easier to stay clean and organized. If you have less stuff to take care of then you will have to clean much less often.

Start by finding one thing every day to throw away. Or one trash bag a week depending on your circumstances. This will help you become a little less emotional because it will be a habit and not something where you are sitting around going through all your things for hours deciding what to keep and what to throw away.

It doesn’t have to even be clothes or big items every day. Maybe you have an old calculator or pens that don’t work, throw those away. It doesn’t need to be too complicated. Maybe keep a trash bag in one of your closets where you put anything you want to donate so that once it is full you can drop it off.

6. Pick Up A Little Bit Everyday

This is one I struggle with. For a few days, I can muster the energy to just do 10 minutes a day, and for others, I cannot. But! For lots of people, this is the solution to all your problems.

Make a running list and keep it somewhere accessible in your room, write everything that needs to be picked up or cleaned in a random order so that every day you have a list to work off of. Don’t write it from worst to best or vice versa, instead make it truly random.

You can put “clean the toilet”, “pick up the bathroom counter”, “organize desk drawers” etc. All of these things can be added in to give you some easier days that are more mindless and that break up the monotony of doing laundry every day.

7. Don’t Worry About Making Your Bed Every day

**This only works in certain circumstances with certain people!!**

If you are the type of person who needs to make their bed every day to feel normal, then I highly suggest a Beddy, then you can use your energy for picking up your room instead of making your bed. This isn’t an affiliate link, but I have wanted one for years, and I have decided it doesn’t bother me that much to not have a bed made every day.

All you really need to do is fix the covers in the morning and you can be done. Give yourself some grace because it is not that serious.

For some, having the routine of making your bed in the morning can be very therapeutic and keep you productive throughout the day. And it is super nice to come home to a made bed, but if you aren’t capable of mustering enough energy in the morning to make your bed, don’t be too hard on yourself.

8. Get A Speaker Or Earbuds

When I lost my AirPods, I went about a week before I went out and bought a new pair because they had changed the game for me. Getting ready in the morning or cleaning in the afternoon has been made an activity when I am listening to a book or some music.

A speaker can also be fun because you can turn it into a dance party! You can also use your computer/laptop as a speaker (even your phone!!)

9. Have A Spot To Put Laundry For When You Don’t Feel Like Doing It

Having a dedicated spot for putting clean laundry so that it isn’t just on the floor can be a game changer. Usually, it is a chair… Give yourself a goal that the chair cannot have clothes on it for more than 3 days. So every day, or every few days, you put the clothes away.

Don’t leave clothes in the dryer because then they will get wrinkly and you won’t want to wear them. If you lay the clothes out flatly on the chair it will be a million times better.
