Why Ginger is Perfect For A Mocktail

Ginger is absolutely amazing for any drink when you aren’t drinking alcohol because it gives you a similar burn.

If you are looking for something you can buy at the store, then ginger beer is going to be your best bet. It is alcohol-free, and it is delicious!

It is also anti-inflammatory and great for your digestion. Have you ever seen ginger shots? They exist for a reason!

Ginger adds copious amounts of health benefits and can aid in your digestion by increasing your stomach acid!

It is also so versatile. It pairs beautifully with sweet, savory, or even sour dishes. There is a reason ginger is a staple in Asian cuisine: it is delicious and great for you! It adds a spicy kick to any drink or dish that will make it that much more interesting!

Ginger, with its unique flavor profile and health benefits, can transform a simple dish or beverage into something truly special. It imparts a warm, spicy flavor that can elevate both sweet and savory recipes.

In baking, ginger is often used in cookies, cakes, and pies, where it adds a warm depth to the sweetness. For example, gingerbread cookies wouldn’t be the same without the characteristic kick of ginger.

In savory dishes, ginger is a key ingredient in many Asian cuisines. It forms the flavor backbone of dishes like stir-fries, soups, and curries.

Regarding beverages, including non-alcoholic ones, ginger can provide complexity and a spicy kick that’s remarkably refreshing. Be it a zesty ginger lemonade, a soothing ginger tea, or a revitalizing ginger smoothie, this root adds a punch that’s hard to replicate.

Moreover, ginger can be used in various forms – fresh, dried, powdered, or even crystallized, each offering a different intensity of flavor. Fresh ginger, for instance, lends a sharp, almost peppery taste, while dried ginger provides a more concentrated and earthier flavor.

Ingredients For A Berry Ginger Mocktail

Obviously, you need berries and ginger, but what kind?

If you want to really take up the flavor, find in-season berries and freeze them to keep the drink nice and cold.

I used a bag of frozen berries because it is cheaper than normal berries, and it is always ready to go in my freezer. For convenience, this is probably your best bet! And on top of that, frozen berries are flash-frozen right after they are picked, so they don’t have time to start to lose their nutrients.

A berry mix with cherries would be DELICIOUS, but the skin of cherries might not mix very well and can become bitter. That is why I chose a bag with raspberries, blueberries, and strawberries from good value at Walmart.

You can mix up what kinds of fruits you want to use; I would stay away from pineapple because pineapple and ginger might not be the best combo (too much acid and spice together).

Make your own simple syrup if you have time (and you should because it is so easy!) Heat equal parts (by volume) of sugar and water on the stove until all the sugar is dissolved. I keep a quart container of simple sugar in my fridge for emergency mocktails!

You can also use whatever kind of sugar you want! Brown sugar would add more molasses flavor and a darker color. If you want to add sweetness without adding extra flavor, then white sugar is the way to go! If you want a more complex flavor and darker color, then brown sugar is for you!

I will warn you not to add just plain sugar into the mix because it will not dissolve properly and will leave granules in the drink. The sweetness will not be evenly distributed and cause sugary bites instead of a nice smooth sweet drink!

You can also use organic cane sugar to make your simple syrup, and will add a little more sophisticated flavor than white granulated sugar.

If you aren’t a huge sugar fan, then honey or maple syrup would also work! I haven’t tried honey in this specific drink, but in other smoothies or frozen mocktails, this is just as good.

What I love about ginger is that it is super cheap, and it lasts forever in the fridge. I would not suggest replacing ginger root with powdered ginger or ginger in a tube. Since it is one of the main flavors of this ginger cocktail, keep the flavor as concentrated and pure as possible!

You can also change out the sprite for a poppi or ginger ale if you want a different flavor. I think Sprite takes on other flavors very well!

I think ginger beer would also be delicious if you are a huge ginger fan, but for the majority of ginger, raw ginger root in your drink will be plenty!

Amazing berry and ginger cocktail for alcohol-free nights when you still want a fun and satisfying drink!
